Frugal Friday: Ugly Frame with DIY Watercolor Arrows

Happy Monday friends!  Hold on to your hats because I know it’s not really Friday for Frugal Friday.  But don’t we all need a little Friday in our Monday??

I’ve been cranking out a few projects around here, finally!  You know what that means???  Christian is finally sleeping through the night!  Y’all!  Sleeping.  Through the night. It took about a week of sleep training, but he caught on pretty quickly that I was no longer going to be feeding him 3 times in the middle of the night.  He pretty much sleeps 7-6, has a bottle, then 6-8 or 8:30.  It’s pretty great.  We are all happier people for it.  And, it means I am not exhausted, so I have time to do things like shop my house for frames that aren’t holding anything to turn into some pretty cool art.

These lovely things were left in the house when we bought it and used to hold some pieces of acrylic with painted flowers on them.  They were cracked and so not my style, so I took them out almost immediately after we moved in.  Then I kind of forgot about the frames until a few weeks ago when I had my stroke of genius about making a mirror out of a tray.  After I hung the tray up, it totally needed some wingmen. Enter: ugly frames.

I gathered all of my materials to tackle these babies; white paint (duh), paint brush, frames, watercolor paper, a few other colors of acrylic paint, a pencil and a ruler.

I gave them a couple coats of paint and let them dry.

Then, I got to work on making the arrows.  Using a ruler, I spaced 3 lines evenly on my watercolor paper (cut to frame size, which conveniently, was in half!) that I hot glued to the back of the frame.

Then, I just sort of free handed some arrow embellishments onto my straight lines.  I found a few arrows online that I liked the look of and mixed them all in together!  The best part about art is that you can’t really mess it up, and if you do, you can try again 🙂 Also, start in pencil so you can erase it!

Then, I just used some acrylic paints and the “watercolor” technique that I used to make my state art to color the arrows.

To finish off the frames (and tie it in with the mirror), I was inspired by this artwork (no longer available, but here is the Etsy shop), I wrapped each end in twine.  I just hot glued the starting end to the back, wrapped around the frame twice and secured it again with hot glue on the back.

Ta-da!  Isn’t it fun??  This was when it was hanging in our entryway.

Now they are in the playroom, on the gallery wall.

I hope you all had a great weekend!  It finally warmed up here (it was over 30 degrees!), and we got a ton of snow, so we were playing outside this weekend!  We jumped in big piles of snow, attempted to make a snowman, and made snow angels!  As much as I am ready for spring, I’m glad we could enjoy a good snow day!

Have a lovely start to your week 🙂
