Frugal Friday: Laundry Edition

Happy Friday friends!!  I don’t want to say anything, but other than a couple of runny noses, we are all healthy around here and getting back to normal.  But, having been sick for a bit means I have piles of laundry to catch up on.  I’m sure you know what I mean when I say that laundry is something that just never ends.  And it is definitely my least favorite chore.  I’m still trying to perfect my laundry routine (ha!) but something I think I’ve finally got right is my homemade laundry detergent.

Homemade Laundry Detergent

I mentioned it originally when I talked about ways we save money a while back.  Since then, I have simplified the recipe I use and made it more natural.  I didn’t like breathing in the Fels-Naptha while I was pregnant, so I switched to Dr. Bronner’s bar soap.

Now I use:

1 Big Box of Super Washing Soda

1 Big Box of Baking Soda

1 bar of Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap

I find my big boxes of soda at Walmart in the laundry aisle and my Dr. Bronner’s soap at Kroger in the organic section.  But you can find it on Amazon, if it’s not sold near you.

You can grate the soap by hand or in your food processor.  I always do it by hand because I’m too lazy to clean my food processor. 🙂

Then, I usually just layer all of my ingredients into my jar that holds my soap.  I use a candy jar like this one.  I mix every time I layer the three ingredients, otherwise it is impossible to mix everything together and you get a big old mess on your counter.  Not that I’m speaking from experience or anything. Um.

Thats it for a whole load of laundry detergent! #punintended

Detergent 4

You only need to use 1 tbsp of detergent per load and we like to add scent boosters, too.  We use the Fresh Spring Waters Purex Crystals and they make our laundry smell fantastic! Now, I don’t use this on my cloth diapers as it is totally not recommended, in case you were wondering ;).  I use good old Tide powder for those bad boys.

If you are looking to save some cash, and you do a million loads of laundry a week, you should give this a shot!  My mom even jumped on board and she has been using her Tide liquid for as long as I can remember!  I’m so proud to spread my frugality to everyone!

I hope you all have an awesome weekend!  Make some laundry detergent 😉
