Crochet Pattern – Double Brim Bobble Beanie

The Double Brim Crochet Bobble Beanie. Try saying that 5 times fast…

Every year, I make my kids new crochet beanies. They basically never need them and we have SO MANY hats in this house it’s kind of ridiculous. Ha! I guess that’s the price you pay when your mom is a crochet designer and loves yarn as much as I do!

This year, Madi wanted to pick out her own yarn for her yearly hat. So, we went to the yarn aisle at Walmart and she promptly picked out a yarn I would never ever choose to work with. So I gently told her no way and then gave her three choices of yarn I actually liked. Is that mean?? She didn’t seem upset about it so I’ll go with no.

We settled on this gorgeous cake of Lion Brand Mandala Sparkle in Nova. If Madi was yarn, then she would be this one. I don’t know where she got it, but she is the girliest girl and sometimes I’m at a loss of what to do with it because I am NOT! She loves all things pink and sparkly so the Mandala Sparkle was perfect for her!

Behind the Design

I’m suuuuuper obsessed with puffs and bobbles. (see my Bobble Clutch pattern here) It’s no secret that I think they are the loveliest and cutest and I want them on everything. Putting puffs on Madi’s hat was the easiest decision I’ve ever made. These adorable puff bobbles paired with pink and sparkles is just what my girl needed! And so, the Crochet Bobble Beanie was born!

Gauge & Sizing

  • This pattern is the exact same for both the infant size and the toddler/child size. The only think you change is the hook size.
  • Using G (4.25 mm) hook : 21 sts x 21 rows = 4″ square in sc
  • Using H (5 mm) hook: 18 sts x 18 rows = 4″ square in sc

Rnd 19-22: sc around then join with sl st. Ch 1.

Decrease Rounds

Rnd 23: *sc in first two sts, sc2tog in next two sts. Repeat from * around then join with sl st. Ch 1.

Rnd 24: *sc in first st, sc2tog in next two sts. Repeat from * around then join with sl st. Ch 1.

Rnd 25: *sc2tog in first two sts and repeat around. Finish off and leave a long tail for closing the top of your hat.

Closing the top of your hat:

First, thread your yarn into your needle. Then, using your tapestry needle, insert yarn tail from back to front of BLO around the top of your hat.

Once you are back to the first stitch, pull tight and then sew any remaining gap closed. Tuck yarn into wrong side of hat and tie off. Leave a tail of yarn if you are planning to add a pom pom!

Making a Pom Pom

There are many ways to make a pom pom! You can use your hand, cardboard or pom pom makers! My personal favorite way is using this pom pom maker set. They come out perfect every time and are so easy and fast!

If you don’t have the pom maker set, browse this YouTube search and you’re sure to find a way to make one with whatever you have around the house!

Attach pom pom to your hat using the tails on the pom pom and threading them through either side of the closed hole on the top of your hat. I always like to extra secure it by tying it to the tail I left from closing the hat because its the easiest way to secure your hat closure!

Finishing your Crochet Bobble Beanie

Once you’ve finished making your Crochet Bobble Beanie and attaching the pom pom, then you’re almost ready to go! Just fold up the brim and then it’s ready to show the world!
