Crochet Raised Stripe Boho Blanket – Free Pattern

Every item I make has a story behind it and the Crochet Raised Stripe Blanket is no exception! This throw is easy to make, modern, cozy, and classic with a little boho thrown in! All the things I love best!

I’ve been on a mission lately to use up all of the yarn I have stashed around before I buy new yarn. Okay, so, I’ve already broken that one and have definitely bought new yarn BUT I do have plans for most of the yarn that I have. That counts right??

An Unlikely Yarn Tale

The yarn in this blanket has already lived one life and gets to start anew. You see, I made myself a cardigan out of this yarn a few years ago, wore it once and then never wore it again. I felt guilty every time I saw it in my closet because I worked so hard on it and it was beautiful, but it just wasn’t my style!

So, I decided to be brave and just frog it! (If you don’t know what “frogging” is, it’s when you take apart your project, you “rrrrrripit” out) I love this yarn and didn’t want it to go to waste so I took the plunge.

Crochet Blanket Time

Making blankets is a real love of mine (see my very first blanket design, the Hexagon Blanket, here!) , so it’s no surprise that I ended up making one with this frogged yarn. Inspiration came in the form of this blanket I saw from Target. The simplicity of it and the cool raised stripe texture had my wheels spinning! I needed to have one in my life.

Naturally, I can’t just buy blankets that I like, I have to make them! It’s a blessing and a curse really. I see something I like and immediately think “can I make that?” I knew I could definitely make this blanket. Plus, I already had the yarn so it was basically free?? I’m going with that.

So, without further ado, lets get to it! This pattern is beginner friendly and a perfect repetitive project with satisfying results!

What You’ll Need

Crochet Stitches Used

  • ch (chain)
  • hdc (half double crochet)
  • hdc in back bump of chain
  • fpdc (front post double crochet)
  • bpdc (back post double crochet)

Gauge

  • 15 sts x 11.5 rows = 4″ in hdc

Pattern

  • **Ch 2 at beginning of each row DOES NOT count as first hdc**

Ch 154, work 1 hdc in back bump of 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across (153 sts)

Row 1: 10 hdc, *1 fpdc, 10 hdc. Repeat from * across. Ch 2 and turn.

Row 2: hdc in first 10 st, *bpdc in fpdc from previous row, hdc in next 10 st. Repeat from * across

Row 3: 10 hdc, *1 fpdc into bpdc from previous row, 10 hdc.  Repeat from * across. Ch 2 and turn

Row 4: 10 hdc, *1 bpdc into fpdc from previous row, 10 hdc. Repeat from * across.

Rows 5-126: Repeat rows 3 & 4

Finished blanket measures approximately 41″ W x 45″ H. It’s the perfect lapghan/throw and is wonderful for snuggling up on the couch!

Increasing/decreasing size

  • You can easily increase or decrease the width of this blanket. Simply increase/decrease the beginning chain by multiples of 11!
  • For example a blanket with the approximate width of 52″ would require a beginning chain of 198 and and approximate height of 60″ would require 173 rows.

Adding Tassels

Now, you can add tassels in a contrasting color (or the same color) to take your blanket to the next level!

How to Make a Tassel

If videos are more your thing, I have a video on IGTV showing how this is done!

  • Wrap your yarn around your small hardcover book/notebook (with the spine facing up) 10 times.
  • Cut yarn from skein and then cut wrapped yarn at the bottom. Set aside
  • Repeat until you have 30 tassels.

Attaching Tassels to Your Blanket

  • Grab one of your tassels and wrap it around your pointer finger, holding the tails in your palm
  • Find the stitch on your blanket that aligns with the end of of one the raised stripes
  • Insert your hook into that stitch from the back
  • Grab your looped tassel and pull through that stitch
  • Using your hands, tuck the tails of the tassel through the top of the loop and pull through
  • Pull the tails tight to finish the knot
  • Repeat this on every stripe end and on each corner of the blanket
  • Trim uneven ends off tassels for a clean look
