Minimalism Monday – Living Room

If your living room is anything like ours, your family spends a lot of time in it. It’s where we watch tv, cuddle, read stories and play. We don’t actually keep anything in this room except for blankets, pillows and a few books. We have one table behind the sofa to hold a diffuser and drinks. We have decorations on the walls and mantle and our tv stand holds just our tv, stereo and dvd player. It has no cupboards, so we really don’t have any storage in this room. We keep our yoga mats in a crate beside the couch because we put yoga on the tv for us and the kids to do.

You want this room to be as calm and clutter free as possible. Go through and take out anything that doesn’t belong or could be stored somewhere else. If you have side tables or coffee tables with drawers/cupboards, pull everything out and only put back what NEEDS to be in the living room.

If you are drowning in remotes, buy a universal remote and pair all of your devices to it. We have one that controls our tv, apple tv, dvd player, and stereo. It was so nice to remove those 4 remotes and replace it with one! Especially because that tiny Apple TV remote kept getting lost!

Your living room is not a storage place for laundry! I’m one to fold my laundry in front of the tv in my living room, but I try my hardest to get it out of there and upstairs when I’m finished. (Putting it away is another story!) You won’t be able to relax in your living room if you see laundry piles staring at you every time you walk in. Trust me, been there!

We are lucky enough to have a separate space for a playroom, so we do not keep toys in our living room. If your living room is the only option for toy storage, try to keep them out of sight when they are put away. This will make it feel like it’s still a grown up space in the evening and you aren’t staring at your child’s toys all the time. Everyone needs a break from staring at toys all day long! It helps to store toys in decorative pieces, too! Try a storage ottoman or cute decorative baskets to keep it feeling like an adult space while making room for your children.

These quick tips are a great place to start when decluttering your living room! Keep it simple and I promise you’ll feel so much better about your space!
